Finding the Right Fit: Evaluating Prospect Maturity

Posted by on Tuesday, January 21st, 2014 with 2 Comments

Jeff worked for eight months on this opportunity. He and Grace, the CFO of a well known food distribution company, had been introduced at a networking event in the spring and agreed to keep in contact. During the summer months, he learned about Grace’s company. At the same time, her comfort level with his input increased as well. Around Labor Day, she mentioned that management was investigating the idea of redacting the company’s internal IT support and finding a third party to provide that service. By Halloween, Jeff had made a proposal, and by Thanksgiving, Grace was recommending that solution to the board.  Having Jeff’s company manage their tech-infrastruture would reduce costs by 44% while offering more comprehensive service.

He received a call from Grace the week before Christmas. His company won the contract, and it was substantial.

Like many of our colleagues, we are excited for this week’s PTC ’14 conference taking place in Honolulu, Hawaii. While the conference is half over as of this morning, it feels like we still have so much left to do and so many things left to learn. We’re already having a great time and will recap much of what happens later in the week. If this year’s conference is anything like PTC ’13, we are in for not only a great deal of fun, but also time well-spent preparing ourselves for the future of our industry and forging new partnerships for the months and years ahead. Here are eight thing we are looking forward to this week at PTC ’14…

Keeping the Lights on and the Doors Open: IT Redundancy in the Modern Enterprise

Posted by on Friday, January 17th, 2014 with 3 Comments

While planning for disasters, data breaches, and catastrophic system failures is a wise idea, a wide range of problems that are substantially more likely to occur are lurking. Small businesses often aren’t proactive in addressing preventable failures, choosing instead to invest in disaster recovery solutions…or not invest in infrastructure at all. Thankfully, a number of very real threats to your IT operations can be easily and inexpensively managed by implementing redundant solutions into different parts of your IT infrastructure. From communications to mission critical applications, preventing minor business interruptions can be just as important to your continued success as any other disaster planning that you do.

The Pros and Cons of Different VOIP Solutions

Posted by on Thursday, January 16th, 2014 with 2 Comments

If you take a moment to speak with small business owners, you will find two sets of people: those using voice over internet protocol (VOIP) phones and those who question how expensive their phone bill is. There is truth behind the humor; never before has phone service for the enterprise been so feature rich and cost effective. Organizations that still utilize expensive “land line” phone technology for their operations are most likely doing so because they are stuck in a long-term contract with the service provider or simply aren’t aware that more cost-effective options are available.

But even those familiar with VOIP might not know (or fully understand) the options available to them. Many VOIP service providers have a specific solution that they offer. This is good because they are expert in this solution, but bad because the client isn’t necessarily getting the best available solution for their organization. Because the acceptance of VOIP in the enterprise is still so recent, there are still many enterprises that have no idea what is available to them in the first place.

The Emergence of BYOD in the Enterprise

Posted by on Wednesday, January 15th, 2014 with 5 Comments

“Bring your own device,” or BYOD, is quickly growing in popularity among businesses of all sizes. There are numerous benefits and drawbacks to allowing employees to use their own hardware in the work environment.   From desktop workstations to mobile devices, having a wide range of devices in your environment inherently creates complexity for administration and security. At the same time, cost savings and increases in productivity emerge, making decisions on BYOD policies complicated for IT administrators and management.
